The 5th Annual New Orleans Burlesque Festival was September 19 - 21st. The 2012 Queen of Burlesque ANGI B LOVELY took some time to write down her thoughts right before passing the crown over to the new Queen of Burlesque for 2013:

I remember the first time I visited New Orleans. My family was on vacation to the Gulf Shores, but I insisted we detour a few hours south so that we would pass through the Crescent City. As it was our first time in New Orleans, we headed straight for Bourbon Street (naturally!), where I ate my first shrimp po’ boy and tasted my first Hurricane. Those few short hours were my favorite part of the whole trip. The sights and smells stayed with me. Little did I know that 11 years later I'd be twirling my tassels just a few blocks down the road!

I grew up a theater kid. I always enjoyed playing dress-up. And I loved musical theater and the whole era of vintage glamour. So all the glitter and the pageantry of burlesque was a natural fit for me. And if a girl’s going to do burlesque, what better place than in La Nouvelle-Orléans?

There’s nothing quite like performing in New Orleans, where they’re always ready to let the good times roll. No other city I know stays so faithful to the traditions of burlesque, embracing not just the striptease, but the comedy, the musicality, the glitz and glamour of it. The stages here are bigger, the lights a little brighter, and the jazz bands livelier than anywhere else. Stepping on stage here, I feel like I’m part of something bigger than life. And that goes for the incredible audiences as well. In the Big Easy, everybody is just a little bit more rowdy; people feel like they can go a little wild and let down their inhibitions. Such a dynamic audience combined with an amazing live jazz band creates something magical. It’s easy to push it over the top, to give my performance that extra oomph, to be just a little bit naughtier. Performing at the New Orleans Burlesque Festival has been amazing not only for the experience itself, but because the festival attracts so much talent from around the world. It has been such an enormous privilege and honor to serve this past year as the New Orleans Burlesque Festival Queen of Burlesque.

This past year has been as wonderful as it has been hectic. So many great opportunities opened up for me – my first time performing not only in New York and all over the United States, but in Europe as well. Being the reigning queen has inspired me to work harder, to push myself to be the kind of performer burlesque aficionados want and deserve. While I have been incredibly busy, I feel so lucky to have been given the chance to travel and perform as much as I have this past year. And I am even more lucky for the great friendships I've forged and for the friends who have stood by me this past year and given me the support I couldn’t have survived without.

I first want to thank all the ladies who went before me and laid a path for me and my sisters of striptease. I am supremely lucky to follow in the high-heeled footsteps of legends such as Tammi True, Tiffany Carter, Gypsy Rose Lee, Candy Barr, and Lili St. Cyr. And of course without producer Rick Delaup and his huge passion for burlesque, there would be no New Orleans Burlesque Festival. I appreciate his dedication to this art and to making sure that it thrives and that all the ladies of burlesque thrive along with it.

All my love and appreciation to my dear friend Ginger Valentine, the 2011 Queen of Burlesque. I have spent a lot of time with her through the years in packed cars and tiny hotel rooms, on our way to perform. She played a huge role in helping me prepare for the festival last year and guided me throughout my reign. I am so lucky to have someone like her on call who is always patient with me and who I can go to with all my awkward questions. She brings her best to every situation. She keeps me focused and pushes me to never settle, to constantly be better in my own wacky way. I'm incredibly lucky to have her for a friend and mentor.

I also cannot forget Missy Lisa, Renea Holiday and all my friends at the Ruby Revue. Dancing with these ladies always pushes me to shine. I love them all like sisters. And a big hug and kiss to Black Mariah, my costumer and partner in crime, who keeps me grounded.

And of course I can’t leave out Owen. He has been incredibly supportive of my art and dedicated to helping me achieve my goals. I really appreciate the way he never looks at me as if I am crazy, no matter what wild idea I come up with – such as the time I wanted to knock a hole in the ceiling of the house to install my trapeze – but instead, he finds a way to make it happen.

I also want to thank my mom, who taught me to be a free thinker and to approach life with an open mind. She has persistently supported me. When she first learned I wanted to be a performer, she told me, “If you’re going to do it, be the best.”

And that’s the best advice I can pass on to the lucky lady who will be crowned Queen of Burlesque for 2013. Be the best. Don’t settle for staying in one place, but push yourself to go further and higher than you have ever gone before in your performance, in your opportunities to experience new places and to meet new people. Be seen. Embrace the new opportunities you will be given. Spend the next year dedicating yourself to the art of striptease. Figure out what makes you unique, what is the best you have to give to your audience and be ready to give it to your fullest. This is your time to shine. And take care of yourself. Even when the pace gets brutal, take time to be nice to yourself, treating yourself to a favorite meal or a new dress. You deserve it! And don’t forget I am here for you should you need anything, whether it is advice, someone to listen to you, or someone to share a few drinks and a few laughs with.

Lastly, I want to give a special shout-out to the underdogs, the ones who have the dream but haven’t yet made it their reality. Keep working. Awkward girls can be queens, too. (I did it!)

Yours in the art of burlyque,

I love my music fresh and sautéed in real butter. Don’t give me any of that canned crap, I take the real deal when I can and put some hot sauce on it!

The New Orleans Burlesque Festival Queen of Burlesque competition is as close as a girl can get to the real deal. We honor each high-heeled footstep our legends took when we perform to a live band, never knowing the offroading the trombone player may take during our bootie shimmy. The Burlesque Festival in New Orleans is deliciously steeped in talent from all over the world and the roaring audience, for me, has yet to meet its match. It has truly been an honor to perform for such amazing people and on such big beautiful stages in New Orleans. It has been my great and humbling pleasure to spend a whole year as the New Orleans Burlesque Festival Queen of Burlesque.

Even though I hail from Austin, when the audience finds out that I’ve made a splash in New Orleans, they expect something incredible. The city has had it fair share of pain and struggle in its history and yet, it triumphs victoriously at every test. It may be for this reason that the audience’s desire and hunger to savor life rivals no other city I’ve ever played. And to my great delight, this feeling is contagious. For a hedonistic burlesque beauty, this city is home.

My year as the Queen has been a fabulous one, pleasurable and prolific at its core. I’ve done my best to share New Orleans’ beautiful rawness and love of life in every town I’ve performed. The title itself has afforded me an invitation into shows I would have never had the opportunity to indulge in. I got to take a new audience as my lover for 147 shows during my reign. I have been a very lucky lady, indeed. While this may all sound exhausting, I’ve been blessed with so much to invigorate me along the way.

I’ve met and performed with some of the most amazing performers and producers this year. It has been such a humbling experience and I know I have so much to learn. As an instructor I like to share what I learn, so here are a few people that have shaped me this year:

Catherine D’Lish. Her smoldering sensuality beckons the audience to come a little closer and, for those who are smart enough to accept the invitation, the rewards are delicious. Her beauty, honesty and silent strength are present off-stage and on. We can all take a hint to work very hard to get to know ourselves and take care of our bodies every day. A little extra stretching, and rhinestoning doesn’t hurt either. Oh and the feathers…oh the feathers!

Kitten DeVille. Kitten has shown me that being a great mother and a great performer, at the same time, is possible. While I struggle to be both, she does it in a way that seems effortless. In the time I’ve gotten to spend with her, I know that it all takes so much work and perseverance and, above all, love and care. She extends this love and care to her burlesque family, as well. Her Dixie Evans tribute piece is still one of my absolute favorites and has informed many new burlesque performers and audiences about our history. They inevitably want to learn more and this legitimizes our place in the world.

Perle Noire. As the first Queen of Burlesque she has shown me that audiences love when you push the envelope—push yourself physically and emotionally, give them all of you. Interact with them and let them be a part of the show. She does this in every single performance and I do my best to do the same. Her enthusiasm and genuine love for her art is delicious.

Michelle L’Amour. Michelle is inventive and creative and truly built to be a burlesque legend and businesswoman. The hours she spends cultivating her art is staggering. She presents on-stage what she would want to see—innovation, sexiness, perfection. Off-stage she creates a business, a way for her to continue to do what she loves and be around the people she loves, admires and trusts. This type of work takes true genius and ingenuity. Her ability to run her business and be such an incredible performer is remarkable.

Dirty Martini. Dirty does what she wants and does what she loves. She’s a classically trained dancer and it shows that she’s had a long and fruitful love affair between what she can do with her body and how the music moves her to use it. I’ve never seen her take focus off of her audience for even a split-second. As an audience member she holds you and molds you and by the end of it, we all feel invigorated and sexy, ourselves. I can not only see but feel her joy of being on stage. She radiates fun and appreciation for her audience and for her art.

Queen Indigo Blue, Miss Exotic World 2011, Reigning Queen of Burlesque. Her majesty has been such an inspiration to me as a performer, a producer, an instructor and a student. She is constantly learning how to improve upon her art and she is gracious enough to share that knowledge with her students and colleagues. Her genuine love of people and the world around her extends to her performances. Her legend’s tributes reflect not only their style, but she takes it a step further to know their story, know them and their energy. In Indigo’s performances she commands respect and honor not just for herself, but for the legends she learns from and admires, as well. She has made it her life’s work to legitimize the burlesque art form and perpetuate its growth in a way that honors our legends and our history. Her work in her Academy of Burlesque is truly inspirational and success of burlesque in Seattle can be attributed to her work and perseverance.

There are so, so many others to name and I have so much more to say about each lady I’ve mentioned. The Queen of Burlesque title has opened so many doors for me this year. Take a moment, even if it is by yourself, to put on your crown, have your favorite cocktail and try to reflect on what this means. This means that you did great in ONE show, now that you’ve done this you have many, many other shows to prove to yourself and the audience that you deserve this award. This title makes it easier for producers to book you. Having the Queen of anything on a poster draws a crowd and producers want to fill that venue! Go to them, they won’t always come to you. Let them know that you are available and what you can do to wow their audience. If there is anything you’d like to do or anyone you’d like to meet, do it this year, you won’t have this title forever and you should always make the most of what you have. Now is the time to be seen. Take as many great photos as you can, do interviews, make appearances, contact the local press and let them know about your upcoming shows. Improve upon your routines, be versatile and above all enjoy what you do and be gracious to your producers and your audience. They are why you are on stage to begin with.

I will always be here for you with a hug and any advice you may want from me. I wish you all of the luck in the world. She had an image and stayed true to it; there's a lot to be said for believing in what you love to do! But there isn't a beaten path to being a burlesque celebrity, in the same way there is a path to try to prepare for a million-dollar record contract. There just isn't a burlesque industry in the same way there is a record or movie industry. We all have multiple streams of revenue, and certainly Dita does. Or, we have to get jobs and do burlesque on the side. And also note, young performers -- Dita responds to all her emails with her best possible grammar and no texting shorthand! This beautiful limited-edition art poster depicts a striptease dancer performing to a live jazz band. To create the original painting, Craig used oil and pencil on Rives BFK cotton paper. The size of the original work is 20” x 32”.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Craig Elliott is an artist based in Los Angeles, California. He received his education at the famed Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and studied under artists such as Harry Carmean and Burne Hogarth. Craig’s carefully crafted and arresting images of nature and the human form have captivated audiences with their visual and intellectual celebration of the beauty in this world and beyond. In addition to his fine art work, Craig has had a hand in designing many of today’s most popular animated films from studios such as Disney (The Princess and the Frog, Enchanted, Hercules) and DreamWorks (Bee Movie, Shark Tale). His work on The Princess and the Frog was recently exhibited in Dreams Come True: Art of the Classic Fairy Tales from the Walt Disney Studio at the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Drawing from the visual worlds of science and nature, the human figure, the grand tradition of American illustration, Japanese scroll paintings and woodblock prints, fantasy illustration, and great artists of Europe, Elliott’s work strikes the viewer at first with a powerful tableau and draws them in to experience the subtlety and beauty within. Beyond the pictorial impact of his work, themes personal to him such as body image, environmental preservation, and social and psychological repression weave themselves throughout his work.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 280px; height: 216px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLoxE4vIucFnBzU2hjmMwwmVwoKG7QlU_D6FME8X_b8Mo_nfyFzN2X5MyP8bmui7YzIf0-kiGbo9A2LRWZGZBu-i0xQ0JAakQir2nK1crGvxcvN66DR8YFHxRb_oXAw7ilnj4KR55k4W6T/s400/craige.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470444065348483362" /> Craig Elliott on the New Orleans Burlesque Festival poster design:

“Essentially the poster blends of my personal artistic interests and style with New Orleans, Jazz and Burlesque imagery and symbology. I also tried to show my respect for the skills and artistry of the French poster makers at the turn of the century when designing the poster. Their composition, color and the pure graphic punch of their work is fantastic. Approaching the poster design from a French angle rather than a purely New Orleans one keeps the design fresher but still keeps a New Orleans flavor.”

On his approach drawing the female form:

"I suppose I could boil it down to trying to show visually how a woman makes me feel. Women are people who are walking art to me. Men's bodies are mere machines, women have that same functional element, but with thousands of little modifications that make them more like flowers to the eye. Flowers are meant to attract and beauty is part of what they are, but stems are just supports and leaves make food for the plant. Beauty vs. pure function - that is a big part of the key to the female form for me."

On the dancer in the festival poster:

"I tried to focus on the single female figure and give her all the qualities of burlesque I could think of. She's dancing with energy and almost floating in a graceful dance. She has a great personality and joie de vivre - she's someone we'd all like to know! Of course she also has beautiful curves that flow with the dance she is doing. In the end I hope she is seen as classic, lively and fun, just like burlesque itself!"

Artist Website http://www.craigelliottgallery.com/
Festival Website http://www.neworleansburlesquefest.com/New Orleans Burlesquehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15659679258250044956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-430306208014889983.post-88358858660594281752010-04-05T19:10:00.000-07:002010-04-05T21:33:01.188-07:00APPLY NOW

The New Orleans Burlesque Festival is now accepting performer applications! The deadline is May 15, 2010. The second annual event will be September 17-19. Applications can be found on www.neworleansburlesquefest.com. The nightly showcases will be held in the beautiful theatre at Harrah’s New Orleans and the House of Blues in the French Quarter. The host hotel will again be the luxurious Westin New Orleans Canal Place Hotel.

ABOUT THE FEST

The New Orleans Burlesque Festival is devoted to classic and traditional styles of burlesque. But, it’s more than fabulous feather fans and big beautiful boas. You can view the festival’s YouTube page to see the variety of performances from the inaugural festival (www.youtube/burlesquefest).

Festival founder and producer Rick Delaup encourages all burlesque performers to apply, “The talent last year was the cream of the crop, but we had few variety acts, and only one “boylesque” act. Also, we were lacking performers from overseas. I’d love to have some of the top talent from other countries represented. And we are also looking for one or two more experienced and engaging emcees.”

“The edgier neo-burlesque performers who are interested in participating should pull out their classic routines, adapt an existing routine, or challenge themselves to come up with something classic, but also unique. We are looking for acts that evoke a certain period of time in burlesque, basically anything pre-1970s.

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS

A staple of the New Orleans Burlesque Festival is its mission to keep alive the live music component of the striptease show, once prevalent during the golden age of burlesque. A live, traditional jazz band accompanies two entire main showcases.

The main event is the Queen of Burlesque competition, which is held at Harrah’s on the Saturday night of the festival. The organizers select celebrity judges in different areas of media and entertainment to judge the very best of the burlesque performers who apply to compete in the festival. Last year’s judges include actor/comedian Jay Thomas, Miss Louisiana USA Lacey Minchew, former New Orleans Saints player Brad Edelman, and burlesque legend Rita Alexander. The competition is not for amateur performers, but for the most established and/or entertaining burlesque dancers in the business.

New Orleans legends of burlesque are on hand throughout the weekend to sign autographs, participate in panel discussions, and conduct workshops. Returning this year are Rita Alexander the Champagne Girl, Evangeline the Oyster Girl, Tee Tee Red, and Wild Cherry. Last year, fest-goers were introduced to former burlesque stripper Eve St. Pierre, who was attending her first burlesque festival.

PARTIES & ACTIVITIES

The NOBF throws free parties throughout the festival. Last year, performers received complimentary absinthe at the Thursday night party, complimentary rum drinks at the opening party (with featured striptease performances), and complimentary beer at the closing party, (which featured entertainment by Kitten on the Keys).

Members of the burlesque community are welcome to submit ideas for workshops, panel discussions, and daytime activities. The NOBF will continue to present panel discussions with the legends of burlesque, as well as the panel on the new stars of burlesque.

ON A SHOESTRING?

The NOBF was designed to appeal to those burlesque performers on a budget. The lowest flight and hotel rates are available in the month of September, which is the off-season for visitors to New Orleans. Venue locations are all within walking distance from the host hotel. The NOBF provides information on the best cheap-eats, directions to a nearby grocery store and Walgreens, and where to locate free WiFi. And all are in the French Quarter! An honorarium and goodie bag is given to performers. Last year’s goodie bag contained, among other things, snacks, Hubig pies, and a flask of rum. The NOBF was able to arrange some airport pick-ups, and hopes to do the same this year.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT THE NOBF:

The shows were inspiring and the company was exceptional. Great music, food, southern hospitality and vintage glamour made the New Orleans Burlesque Festival a well-orchestrated masterpiece.
